The sweet, innocent partner of Terazuma Hajime, Wakaba Kannuki is the rare female presence in the menagerie of male shinigami within Yami no Matsuei. She is a nice-natured girl, gentle and cheerful, and one of her specialities is baking cakes. She is usually seen with her dear 'Hajime-chan' and maintains friendly relations with everyone. On one occasion, Tsuzuki was seen conspiring to get Wakaba to transfer to his area, as she could provide many delicious sweets due to her talent in the culinary arts. Although she's not one of the main character, Wakaba brings a sweet and comedic change from the Yami no Matsuei story line.
Wakaba is descended from a family of priestesses, and she's also one of the four Gatekeepers, special people who can open Gates of Gensoukai, the digital space in which the shikigami reside when not called upon for battle. Gates are enormous doors which divide the Gensokai from the real world: there are four Gates, Genbu, Soryu, Suzaku and Byakko, and for each Gates there is a Gatekeeper. Kannuki is the Gatekeeper of the Suzaku Gate.
Like the other Gatekeepers, she has differently-coloured eyes - the right eye of Wakaba is orange.
The Gensoukai is located on the internet. It moves continually, and only the Gatekeepers can connect with Gensoukai Gates, guessing precise coordinates. When the Gatekeeper opens the Gate, Guards are called. Suzaku Gate's Guards are Kotaro and Kojiro: they are Tengu, fantastic creatures with human body, a red long beak and wings.
